The Timberland name immediately brings the image of a sturdy, reliable, six-inch waterproof boot in newbuck leather to mind – these boots, with their rubber lug sole and padded contrast collar are a truly modern fashion icon. The Timberland company has its roots in Boston, where boot making apprentice Nathan Swartz began his career as a stitcher in 1918 – cutting leather, stitching seams, attaching soles and honing his skills as a craftsman of fine leather footwear. By the early 1950s, Swartz had bought half of The Abington Shoe Company, and three short years later, he bought the remaining shares to establish what remains a family business today.
