Today, Nike name is widely-recognised around the world as a producer of top-quality athletic shoes, clothes and accessories for athletes at all levels, who strive to be the best they can. The Nike company has its roots in the Pacific Northwest – headquartered in Oregon, the firm started selling running shoes in the 1960s. Nike co-founders Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight started out as Blue Ribbon Sports, distributing Tiger running shoes from Japan. By the early 1970s, the pair had settled on the swoosh logo and the name Nike for their first line of footwear. The shoes, dubbed ‘moon shoes’ featured a waffle sole and were first used by athletes competing in trials for the US Olympic track and field team in Eugene, Or.
The primary focus of Nike’s business in those early years was footwear – the company made shoes for track and field athletes as well as tennis players. As athletes began to embrace the brand, the company branched out to provide innovative shoes to meet the needs of athletes in a number of sports, from marathon running to basketball. Nike’s development and design teams also began to develop a vast collection of sportswear from running shorts, track tops, and sweatshirts to gloves, jackets and even swimwear.
