Linen is a great summer fabric, because it’s breathable, supple nature means the fabric feels cool and stays fresh looking even in hot, humid weather. Linen’s unique properties, such as the ability to become more soft and supple with use, come from the cellulose fibre found in the stem of the flax plant. Because it’s a natural fibre, the quality of linen varies depending on where the flax it’s spun from was grown. This regional variation in quality can be attributed to the effect different environments has on the cultivation of flax – and is perhaps why linens from Belgium, Ireland and Scotland are widely-regarded as the world’s finest fabrics.
While linen was once a popular material for making bed sheets, today it is more frequently used for making fine table cloths and towelling, in addition to a wide range of fashionable clothing. Linen jackets were all the rage with the women of Revolutionary France, and in fact, women of that era throughout Europe are often pictured wearing the popular style of a close-fitted, long-sleeved linen jacket with either a printed or embroidered floral pattern. These jackets were often quilted to enhance the artistry of the printing, and typically worn with petticoats.
Generally, linen clothing is best-suited for summer months as it is exceptionally breathable, but offers little protection against the elements. This is why so many ‘holiday suits’ and ‘summer suits’ are made of linen.
The traditional linen jacket for men closely resembles a suit jacket or blazer – generally it has a three button, single-breast fastening, button cuff, flap pockets, a selection of internal pockets and a vented back. Variations on the basic linen jacket theme include the number of buttons on the cuff, the style of the venting at the back and the number of internal pockets. Linen jackets are often paired with contrasting or similarly coloured linen trousers to make up the suit holiday makers have traditionally purchased for sojourns abroad to tropical climates.
Ladies linen jackets are more variable. Though there is a women’s version of the traditional men’s linen suit coat, women enjoy a wider variety of linen garments overall. Linen jackets for women are generally more fitted, drawn in at the waist and often include detailed embroidery accents to flatter the figure. Linen jackets for women are available in a variety of lengths, appropriate for wear with trousers, skirts and dresses.
Linen is a strong material that has proven to be quite tough wearing, but still, it is not an ideal cloth for making children’s jackets – these are difficult to find, and most readily available from smaller boutiques, tailors who specialise in children’s clothing and fine department stores.
Stylish linen jackets for men and women are easily purchased in the spring and summer months from a wide variety of tailors, as well as high street shops and online clothiers. In the off season, linen jackets can usually be special ordered from bespoke tailors, as well as some high street shops specialising in formal apparel.
