In 1993, Hooch first started selling baggy knitwear aimed at the male snowboarding community along with retro-style quilted jackets. The small menswear company gradually increased it’s portfolio to include colourful clothing suited for women following a similar lifestyle. By 1998, Hooch began to shift their product development focus to womenswear – and had an instant hit, the Eskimo coat. A few short years later, in 2004, Hooch opted out of the menswear market to focus exclusively on crafting fashionable clothes, coats and jackets for street-wise, independent women.
If you’re looking for an old-school Hooch men’s jacket, good luck to you. These occasionally turn up on auction sites such as eBay or in ‘vintage’ clothing shops, but it is exceptionally rare to find one in good condition.
However, Hooch do an exceptional range of coats and jackets for the ladies. Catering to a more fashionable clientele than initially planned for, Hooch maintains the essence of their beginnings by producing trendy coats and jackets with an element of street cred second to none. As the brand focus is on keeping women in with the in crowd, the collection of coats and jackets Hooch offer changes from season to season – but some of the classics are always present in one form or another.
There are short jackets, long jackets, heavy and lightweight jackets; truly jackets to suit most situations. Popular styles in the Hooch collection are almost always given women’s names. A few examples from the current collection are: the Amy jacket, with a detachable fur hood and foldover fur cuffs; the Jade ‘Short Eskimo’ jacket, in canvas with a fur-lined hood and pom-pom balls; the Reece ‘Shrunken Blazer’ jacket, a classic blazer shape, drawn in at the waist with a hook fastening; the Kelly crop cardi, with a wide, furry collar and deep turn-back cuffs; the Natalie scroll gilet with fur lining, zip and popper fastenings and a drawstring waistband; the Samantha Star quilted jacket, a bomber with popper fastenings and a fold-away hood; the Libby jacket, with a drawcord down the back to adjust the fit; the cropped Javine jacket, with a fur-trimmed hood and quilted details; and the Nadia blazer, a fitted button-up jacket with a sweat-style hood attached. Hooch also have a reasonable selection of tracksuit tops, zip-up cardies and hoodies available in sizes to suit most women.
