A utilitarian object, purpose-built to meet the needs of men in air combat situations, the bomber or flight jacket we know today has its roots in the cockpits of military planes. During the first world war, many RFC pilots took to wearing long leather coats to protect them from the often harsh environments of the sky. They unwittingly started a trend which worked its way through the armed forces around the world.
The generic pattern for a bomber jacket includes: a high wrap-around collar, zip closures with wind flaps, snug-fitted cuffs and waist. The first truly iconic flight jacket was made of sheepskin, designed and produced by Leslie Irvin. Irvin, a California native, was instrumental in the design of parachutes that saved thousands of lives, and turned his hand to crafting a jacket suitable for pilots exposed to the elements. Irvin manufactured jackets in the UK for the Royal Air Force throughout WWII.
The A2, B3 and G1 flight jackets are iconic pieces of military clothing, both of which were created by the US military in collaboration with jacket makers Schott. Schott’s bomber jackets were made from leather and wool, and protected flight crews from the elements for sixty years. Today, the popular A2, B3 and G1 flight jackets are still available for purchase from Schott retailers around the world, as is the iconic B3 style bomber jacket.
Modern planes offer their crews better protection from the elements, however, military outfitters continue to craft suitable outerwear for the harsh environment that pilots and other airmen might encounter. Today’s take on the bomber jacket is known as the MA1, a US military jacket typically available in sage green and black. The MA1 jacket is made from nylon, has two slanted pockets on the front, a pair of inner pockets and even pen holders on the outer left sleeve.
Authentic military wear is difficult to obtain without knowing a soldier or actually being one yourself. However, there are a growing number of shops which carry used military gear along side replica merchandise. Additionally, there are a number of online wholesalers offering replicas of the more popular military flight and bomber jackets.
Many popular designers and jacket makers craft their own modern versions of the traditional bomber jacket, these are made in a variety of styles and from a wide selection of fabrics, from the traditional leather to rayon, canvas and even satin, to suit most tastes as well as the changing seasons. These more fashionable, but perhaps less authentic, bomber jackets are available in just about any shop that sells coats and jackets in the UK, as well as from a wide selection of online retailers.
