Ben Sherman Jackets

As designers go, Ben Sherman is about as British as can be. Born and raised in Brighton, he travelled to the USA in his 20s – after a string of dead-end jobs and failed relationships, he married his third wife. Her father was Aaron Minken, a successful clothing maker who taught Sherman everything there was to know about the clothing business. In the 60s, Sherman moved his family back to Brighton – it’s here that he started his now legendary fashion empire, from a small factory in Bedford Square.

Sherman’s shirts were unique, featuring a button-down collar with an extra button at the back, and the iconic Ben Sherman black label, always present on the side of the left-hand pocket. The shirts were originally sold in distinctive black and orange boxes, and were popular with the Mod culture of the time. In the late 60s, Sherman opened a shop in London’s Carnaby Street as well as a boutique in Duke Street, Brighton. Around this time, Ben Sherman also launched his first collections for women and boys. Demand quickly outstripped the production capacity of Sherman’s factory in Brighton, so he expanded his manufacturing base into Northern Ireland. In 1972, Sherman sold the company to the Northern Ireland Finance Corporation. He died at age 62, in 1987 following heart surgery.

From those roots, the Ben Sherman company has evolved into a global lifestyle brand – but the emphasis on youth culture remains, as does the icon most often associated with the Ben Sherman name: the RAF roundel. The Ben Sherman name is still synonymous with good-looking, streetwise, stylish young adults who stand out from the crowd. The roundel, also called a Mod target by some, and the instantly-recognisable back pleat and loop of a Ben Sherman shirt are enduring symbols of modern youth culture at its best.
